I’M NOT SURE CLIMBING EVEREST STILL COUNTS AS AN ACHIEVEMENT WHEN SO MANY PEOPLE DO IT

A line. But not a Saturday morning queue at the supermarket. A line of people climbing Everest. So you have to wonder — is climbing Everest still a big deal today? Or has it become some kind of premium adventure package you can book if you’ve got the time, money, and a moderate tolerance for discomfort? Because when Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay made it to the top in ’53, there were no maps, no high-tech gear, no fixed ropes, no GPS-marked routes. That was pure exploration. Now it’s all set up: sherpas plan the whole route, haul your gear, tell you when to breathe, where to step, how much oxygen you’ve got left. Is it really the same kind of feat?

Don’t get me wrong — it’s not easy. The cold’s still brutal, the altitude’s still unforgiving, and the risk hasn’t gone anywhere. But if reaching the summit means waiting in line like you're boarding a ride at a theme park, maybe we need to rethink what we call an “achievement.”
