AUGUST IS SLIPPING AWAY

August officially ends on Monday, but we’ve decided to say goodbye to it today, the way it deserves, because the end of August should always be marked with a minute of silence, a cold beer and a distant stare into the horizon.

August isn’t just a month. August is a way of looking at life. It’s the month we automatically associate with holidays, even if it’s been years since we had the kind of summer break we remember from childhood. It means waking up without an alarm, having no idea what day it is, eating at ridiculous hours and discovering that a shower, a pair of flip-flops and a clean T-shirt can be considered perfectly acceptable formalwear.

For a few weeks, even people without a penny to their name get to feel rich. Not because their bank balance suddenly has more zeros, but because they have something far more valuable: time in which nobody is telling them what to do.

You can be sitting on your balcony in a plastic chair, drinking a can of beer while listening to your neighbor argue with his wife, and still feel as though life is smiling at you. Because you don’t have to work tomorrow. Because you don’t need to set the alarm. Because for a few hours, the world can keep spinning without you having to take part in it.

But everything comes to an end. The suitcases go back into the closet, the flip-flops return to the bottom of the shoe rack and the alarm clock reappears on the bedside table with the same asshole attitude it has always had. September arrives loaded with schedules, unanswered emails, school runs, traffic and people claiming that this time they really are going to start taking the gym seriously.

Most people will already have to start looking ahead to August 2027 to fantasize about that brief period of the year when we can pretend we’re actually in control of our own lives. There are twelve months to go, but there’s no point thinking about it too much. We just have to keep surviving one week at a time, one public holiday at a time and one beer at a time.

Today, we raise a glass to August. To those who traveled to the other side of the world and those who never left their neighborhood. To those who slept in five-star hotels and those who set up an inflatable pool on the terrace. Because holidays aren’t always about going somewhere far away. Sometimes they’re simply about nobody being able to force you to be anywhere else.

Until next year, August. You didn’t last long, you cost us far too much and, as always, you disappeared just as we were starting to get used to being alive.

The videos at the top of this post come from the Instagram profile of a stunning girl. Or maybe it would be more accurate to say they come from the profile of a girl who doesn’t actually exist.

I can’t say for sure, but there’s something about them that makes me think they were created using artificial intelligence. Certain movements, a few gestures, that almost-too-perfect beauty… Small details that still raise suspicions when you look closely enough.

The problem is that those little clues are disappearing fast.

During the early years of artificial intelligence, it was relatively easy to spot a generated image. Hands with six fingers, weird-looking eyes, distorted objects, impossible shadows, or bodies that defied the most basic principles of anatomy. The image might have looked impressive, but there was always something that eventually gave it away.

Now it’s not that simple. Faces show natural expressions, skin has texture, hair moves realistically, and light behaves exactly as it should. Voices breathe, hesitate, laugh, and change tone. Videos include camera movements, shallow focus, flaws, and tiny imperfections deliberately added to make them look real.

And this is only the beginning.

SPYING ON THE NEIGHBOR

Let's admit it: we've all looked out a window a little longer than we probably should at some point.

You're at home, you glance over at the building across the street and notice someone with the lights on and the curtains open. And even though you weren't looking for anything in particular, suddenly you're curious about what's going on in there.

Part of the explanation is pretty simple: we're social animals and our brains are naturally curious about other people. We're interested in seeing what they do, how they live, how they interact and, along the way, comparing their lives with our own.

But there's another ingredient that makes it particularly appealing: we're seeing something that wasn't prepared for us to see.

On social media, practically everything is selected, staged and often even fake. A neighbor's window offers the exact opposite: little glimpses of everyday life without filters or staging.

It's basically unscripted television. And precisely because you don't know what's going to happen next, even something completely ordinary can keep you watching for a few extra seconds.

Of course, there's a difference between that casual glance we've all taken at some point and turning your neighbor's life into your own personal Netflix series. Curiosity is human; deliberately invading someone's privacy is another story altogether.

And if the neighbor happens to appear naked...

Well, let's just say scientific curiosity increases considerably.

SHE CAN'T BRING THE ELBOWS TOGETHER

There are people who can run a marathon, solve a Rubik's Cube in under a minute, or play the violin with their eyes closed. And then there's her, facing the greatest challenge of her life: realizing she can't touch her elbows together.
